Eggers said recently from San Francisco, where he lives with his wife and family. As if that weren’t enough good fortune, both of them star Tom Hanks. Now, however, films based on two of his books are about to appear - “The Circle,” written and directed by James Ponsoldt, which will open at a date to be determined, and “A Hologram for the King,” written and directed by Tom Tykwer, opening Friday, April 22. He has picked up a couple of screenwriting credits, including one for the movie version of Maurice Sendak’s children’s classic “Where the Wild Things Are,” which he wrote with the director, Spike Jonze, but somehow his own novels seemed to elude the big screen. Dave Eggers, once the wunderkind of American letters, has been writing books for close to 20 years.
